teaching
In addition to her successful performing career, Molly devotes an equal amount of time and energy to teaching. She is in high demand as a private teacher and is widely recognized as a pedagogue and entrepreneur. She has over two decades of teaching experience, beginning with guided internships in piano teaching and a Teaching Assistantship at the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees included thorough coursework in piano pedagogy, and she has maintained a thriving private studio for the past 20 years. Molly instructs students of all ages (from preschool to adult) and abilities, from the recreational to the very serious, including students who have gone on to pursue music degrees at major universities. Molly's teaching philosophy is clearest through her work at her home studio in Bethesda, MD, and at Opal Music Studio in Alexandria, VA, where she is an owner and the Artistic Director; started in 2008, Opal now has over 250 students and 15 faculty members, and continues to grow. Her philosophy, and that of the studio, can best be summed up as tirelessly resourceful--doing anything and everything to motivate all types of students, and to that end, Molly has devised games, group projects, events, and activities to inspire and foster creativity and dedication. She has created an environment where students are comfortable and open to new ideas, excited to learn and experiment, and focused on their study.
Molly also currently serves on the faculty of The George Washington University where she teaches applied piano lessons, theory labs, and music literacy courses, coaches chamber music, and performs in student recitals and ensembles. Molly gives frequent lectures and masterclasses, including recent engagements at Seton Hill University and Penn State University. Past lecture topics include entrepreneurship and business, motivating overscheduled or underinterested students, and strategies to maximize studio results.
